Tamatsi Maxa Yuawi - jbs

Tamatsi, the Deer God, is a very important figure in the huichol cosmogony. As many others figures he has a double entity: he is the prey hunted by the huicholes during the ritual sacrifices and at the same time he is the guide of the hunters; in this way Tamatsi realizes the ethical ideal of the mara'ekame (the huichol shaman): always  being ready to self-sacrifice for his community. There are various Deer Gods; this is the Blue Deer.
